During 2011, I was contacted by Dixie's mom about a pet session for her. Our schedules never seemed to match up but we finally managed to catch up last weekend.
Like people, not all dogs react the same way to being in the studio environment. Dixie is an amazing dog and very well trained but the lights still made her quite nervous. In order to get around that we decided to go out in the yard and let Dixie work out some of the anxiety and enjoy the snow while I captured a few shots. She is such a silly girl we laughed so much while watching her run around and play in the snow.
It was really great to finally meet Dixie and her family.

Chip and Sweetie

Last weekend, I had the chance to spend sometime with Chip and Sweetie. These two little dogs are such sweethearts and so well mannered. Each of them had been special obedience training which made capturing these images much easier. It was truly a pleasure getting to work with them and meet their mom.

Leci's Senior Session

Years ago when I left Louisiana for the Army, Leci was just a baby. I only make it home to visit family once, maybe twice a year and I can’t say when was the last time I really saw Leci. I do know it had been a long time.

Like I had done with most of my younger cousin’s (there are quite a few), Leci and I reconnected through Facebook. It was nice to be able to get to know her after all the time away.

When I knew I would be going home for a visit, I offered to take Leci’s senior photos. We were both really excited about doing a photo shoot together. I really had a great time and it really meant a lot to me to be able to spend this time with her.

A Lunch Out With Frankie

While I was in Louisiana visiting family I got a text from my sister with a picture of this sad faced little bulldog saying, "Frankie wants to meet you". So my Mom and I went to met Frankie and my sister for lunch. Frankie belongs to my sister's boss and he goes to work with his owner everyday, greeting everyone that comes into the office.
Of course after seeing his adorable little face in that text message, I couldn't resist bringing my camera along to get a few photos of my own. It was fun getting to spend a little time playing and capturing Frankie's unique personality.

I hope Mike and Eva enjoy these. Thanks for letting me photograph Frankie.

Wish Bone Canine Rescue- Sneak Peek

I know it's been a while since I have posted. I promise are very good reasons. First reason, I have been editing and wrapping up client work for the year before my trip home to Louisiana. Second is that I have been working on a project and this time it's not a personal project. So, everyone who knows me knows that I am a huge softy for animals. Well I decided to take what I had been doing before with taking photos of rescue dogs to a whole new level. I sat down one day and wrote a business proposal for a local dog rescue called Wish Bone Canine Rescue to create a 2012 calendar. This proposal involved taking photos, finding sponsors to ease the cost of printing and designing the calendar.
A3 you probably guess by a previous posting, Wish Bone said yes. They joined in to help by assigned volunteers to help with identifying sponsors and driving dogs to locations for photo sessions. While searching for sponsors the volunteers were contacted by a local print company called StarNet Digital Publishing wanting to assist with the printing.
Well as I type this today, I can't seem to express my excitement. It's has truly been an amazing day!!! I was able to pick up the proof and see all that work come together for the first time in printed form. Tonight, my husband Chris is making minor adjustments and tomorrow the printing starts.
This project has been a truly amazing experience. Something that started with just an idea and watching it evolve into this incredible event that has brought people and local businesses together, all to help local dogs get the care they need...it's truly a blessing.
Through the whole process, getting to know the family of volunteers and fosters that work with the Wish Bone organization and meeting all the dogs in the calendar (and those up for adoption) has been wonderful for me and my family. My son and I also now volunteer on adoption days as well as photographing new adoptable dogs that come into Wish Bone. If you want to help out, Wish Bone can always use volunteers or even foster families for dogs waiting for their homes. Check them out online.

For the Dogs

I haven't posted in a little while, which is not typical of me. If you are a friend of my photography on FaceBook, you have seen me posting a ton of dog photos lately. (No, I haven't given up on photographing people..ha-ha) The reason for all the dog photos in the last few weeks is because I am currently working on a fundraising calendar for Wish Bone Canine Rescue.
For those who have met me or know me well are very aware of my love of animals and pet photography. For the last 2 years I have worked with Paradise Pets capturing images of their foster dogs. This year I thought why not take a larger step and instead of just taking adoption photos, why not help a rescue raise money for all the dogs. So I presented a proposal and plan to the Vice President of the Wish Bone organization and she loved the concept.
We are almost done with the calendar photo sessions and will be spending November designing the actual calendar. The plan is to have the calendar available for purchase in time for the holidays.
I have had so much fun capturing all of the dogs unique personalities, meeting their owners/ foster families and hearing their individual rescue/adoption stories. This project has been a real blessing, it means a lot to me being able to help the dogs and the volunteers of Wish Bone.

Currently we are looking for calendar sponsorships to help defer some of the cost of printing. If anyone is interested please contact myself or Wish Bone Canine Rescue for more information.

Eli's Return

You may recognize Eli from a previous post earlier this year. As soon as she returned from summer break Eli and I got together for a session. It never fails everytime she and I get together, we come up with all kind of creative ideas. The camera certainly loves her and it always shows in the images we create together.

We had a lot of good laughs over this dress. It's cute but not an easy one to model...but Eli rocked it.

I love the way these images came out. I had a minor headache at the start of the shoot that kept getting worse. Thankfully, I hung in there long enough to capture these. There is another from this group in her sneak peek.

Last weekend we had the honor of photographing the gorgeous outdoor wedding of two family friends. We've known Jada and Mike for a long time so it was really an honor when they asked us to be a part of their special day. These two are so adorable together, plus knowing their friends I knew there would be plenty of great photo ops.
For the ceremony Jada and Mike chose a small service at Humiston Woods with mostly family. The fall colors and sounds of the harp made a beautiful back drop for their ceremony.
At the reception they chose to have us set up a photo booth to capture fun memories of their guest. Those photos can be previewed on our Facebook Page.

Maddy- Senior Session

So I had to admit to someone that in the 14 years that I have lived in Illinois, I had never been out to Funk's Grove. That someone was Maddy. I was really excited to get out of the studio and go capture some of the early fall colors in Maddy's senior photos.

Modern Version of a Classic Style- Pin-up Style

I have been toying around with pin-up style concepts for a while. My friend Alysha has a timeless look that works great for pin-up/cheese cake style images. After being inspired recently by a friends studio space (Pics for a Cure), I gave Alysha a call. Alysha and I had been toying around with a few concepts so this was a great time to try some of those ideas out. When I told her about the space and what I was thinking, she was totally up for it.

It was a gorgeous day, Chris and I hopped in the car and drove out to Lincoln, IL to spend the day with an amazing family. The whole afternoon was just good laughs, good company and we can't forget the good food! Grandma D even planned a scavenger hunt for the kids so we could get some candid shots!

My Mother and Son Day

Last week, I took a vacation day from work to spend time with my son Armond. We made plans to take the cameras out to Allerton Park in Monticello, Il and the stop at Moraine View State Park for some horseback riding. I had heard so many great things about Allerton but had never made the journey out to visit which made it a perfect adventure for mother and son day.
Armond has been playing with cameras for a year or so now in Auto but is just showing interest in shooting in manual. We both agreed that the trip to Allerton would be a great opportunity to give him a photo 101 on the technical aspects of the camera. It was impressive at how quickly he picked the basics up and next thing I knew he was dialing the settings in himself and snapping away. It was really awesome to get to watch him work with the camera and really see him enjoying it. (plus it's not video games!! haha!)
After Allerton, we had an appointment with Double L Outfitter's to go trailriding at Moraine View State Park. It had been a really long time since I had rode and it was Armond's first time on a horse alone. He did great and we both really had so much fun. Our trail guide Paige was wonderful! I think next time I am going to try and bring the camera along, we rode in some really amazing spots. If your in the area and want something to do go check them out...we highly recommend it!

Allison and I have known each other for several years so when she asked me to take photos of her and her son Julian I was really excited. Her son, Julian is an amazing young man. He had his mom and me laughing so much during this session. We really had a great time with this shoot!

Last Saturday, I went to visit Paradise Pets Hotel and Day Spa to take a few photos of the new foster dogs. It's always a treat for me to get to spend time with the adoptable dogs.

These last two weekends have been wedding filled and I did not mind one bit. Actually these weddings are very dear to me since my last two brides (Jessie and Cari) are both friends of mine. I actually met Cari through Jessie, both of them have modeled for me and they both chose to get married in back to back weekends!

Cari and Matt's wedding was at the Marriott in Normal, IL. If you haven't had a chance to check out it out...it's amazing and has plenty of great photo locations.

It was amazing to get a chance to be a part of Jessie and Josh's wedding day. These two are such an adorable and loving couple. Their outdoor ceremony at the Davis Lodge was truly beautiful and we were fortunate that the rain stayed away!
It really was an honor being a part of their day. Jessie and I became friends a few years ago when I was trying to build my portfolio. She used to patiently sit or stand for hours while I tried different lighting ideas. I have to say this made the wedding day photos even easier because she knew just what to do and what to expect...lol.

Jessie's Dad pulled me aside shortly after I arrived to ask me to make sure I took a picture of him giving her the gift he got her. It was just so sweet seeing the two of them sitting together talking while she opened the gift. She was hoping for the keys to his motorcycle but she got a beautiful necklace instead.

Something Out Of the Ordinary

About 2 weeks ago I posted a sneak peek of my "art project" with my friend's daughter Ocean. In that post I promised everyone an explanation behind that project and of course more images. So here we go....
As a mother, over the past year I have watched what was once my little baby boy grow into young man. The same goes for my best friends daughter Ocean...I watched her go from this little girl with awkward long arms and legs to this beautiful young woman. Seeing these two go through these changes put an image in my head of a young girl (herself doll-like) in a dark room with wood floors and a pile of dolls. This was the beginning of it all.
In the last few months I have seen so many changes in these two...going from a children with toys to young adults with technology. I have seen them at times, torn between being that child or being the adult...and we all know that turmoil, we were once their age.

So, now you know what the driving vision was behind these images. My goal was to find a way to visually dipict that tear between child and young adult.

I really hope everyone enjoys these as much as I enjoyed taking and editing them.
Ocean, thank you for posing for me. You are a beautiful and amazing young woman. I hope we can shoot together again sometime.

It's Finally Warm

Thankfully it's finally nice out except for what seems like a few weekly thunderstorms, but it's not freezing out so I guess I can't complain! I was lucky a few weekends ago to catch a break in the rainy weather to get outside and shoot. It was a little windy and the sky was still a little grey but Jessica and I made do. Of course we couldn't resist coming back to the studio for a few shots too.
As usual Jessica did not disappoint!

Special Project- Sneak Peek

This is the sneak peek for a project that is very personal to me. My son and my friend's daughter were the inspiration behind what provoked me to create the images in this project. The initial idea started about a year ago and I've been developing the concept behind it ever since. However a name for it still seems to escape me even thought he images are now complete.
The shoot for this project was yesterday and I was lucky enough to have my friend's daughter Ocean as my model. I think she was a perfect choice! I hope everyone enjoys the sneak peek. I will have more from this shoot soon and promise to give more detail behind what drove me to create these images.

Any Day Now

Last week I had a chance to do a mini-maternity shoot with Windy. We had so much fun doing this shoot. We had a basement full of women...lol. My friend Alysha assisted with wrapping Windy in the gauze and coached her on poses. Of course Lacey and Alysha were also here to work on Windy's belly mold. Hopefully after the baby boy arrives (which should be Any Day Now) we will be able to get some shots of him with his mold.

The Rockstar Revisited

For several years Armond wore a mohawk, it all started at about the age of 9 or 10. Of course, over time he wanted a change and let his hair grow back. During the course of this year he's had to get glasses and braces which provoked him to ask me about getting his mohawk back. (to offset the glasses and braces..lol)
Below are a couple of shots from Armond's 8th grade end of the year dance with his new mohawk...it's much taller than the original! I can't get over how fast he's grown up.

A Weekend For the Dogs- Paradise Pets Foster Dogs

It was 2 years ago this weekend that I adopted my little puppy mille rescue dog Mojo from Paradise Pets Hotel and Day Spa. Well I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate his adoption than spending the weekend with dogs!So, I started my Saturday morning with the foster dogs at Paradise Pets Hotel and Day Spa, exactly where I found Mojo 2 years ago. If any of you are looking for a great companion, they have some wonderful dogs looking for homes. I speak from my heart as I have adopted both of mine from Paradise. Below are the three foster dogs I spent time with Saturday morning.

Rosy- such a beautiful girl with such a sweet personality.

Who could resist that smile...such a happy girl.

Amos- I fell in love! He is such a handsome boy and the son of Rosy. He is a little timid at first but is so loveable once he is comfortable with you. I had to let him inspect my camera before he really showed his photogenic side. :)

Kegan- The image below should tell you what kind of personality Kegan has...lol. This adorable boy has such a fun personality. He's very playful and loves attention! He really was a joy to photograph.

On Mother's Day, I spent the day with my family(non-furry and furry ones). Chris's parents even brought Madison over to play with Monty and Mojo.

Brown Eyed Beauty- Eli

Last weekend a friend needed to cancel her appointment, leaving me with an opening. I really wanted to get some shooting in so I contacted the beautiful Eli. She and I had spoke about collaborating before but we had never met in person or really spoke of specifically what she was looking for in a shoot. In about 20 minutes of her arrival, we were sitting on the floor in my studio with clothes, makeup, shoes and jewelry laid out discussing outfit ideas. (you would have never guessed we had just met..lol)
We had lots of fun and some good laughs! (it's a theme around my house...we love making people laugh)
One thing I know for sure is...the camera loves this lady!! I can't wait until we get to work together again. I'm already coming up with ideas of what that will look like, so be ready to see new work with Eli in the near future.

My Personal Rockstar

My son Armond is our personal little rockstar. He is such a fun personality and never really minds getting in front the camera for me. In the Least Expected Times or Places

It's probably been six months since I walked into the resturant and had this gorgeous young lady seat me at my table. After talking about it over our breakfast, Chris agreed that she would be a great subject. I wasn't expecting to find a model that saturday morning and it was evident in the way I was dressed. I was in my weekend "work around the house" clothes and had my hair pulled up....to sum it up I probably looked like a bum. Lucky for me Cortney took a chance and trusted my business card...PHEW! HAHA!
This young lady is not only beautiful but smart and talented as well. I had such a great time working with her and look forward to getting together again soon.

Chicago Shoot Post 1

The plan was to go up to Chicago, visit with my friend Kate and take some shots of her and a pair of models I had hired. Well I learned not every well laid plan goes as expected. First I was struggling to find a good make up artist, then I finally got that nailed down. Then the two models had some personal stuff come up and were unable to make it. (I hope to catch up with them some other time)
Fortunately for me, my dear friend Kate has a great network of friends in the city! She was able to get a couple of friends to come out on very short notice but since it was short notice I wasn't really sure what to expect. All I heard was Kate say to Heather on the phone, bring your whole closet and then she gave me a look and giggled.
When Heather and Cobra showed up it took a couple of trips to the car to be able to bring everything inside. I was in complete costume heaven!!!
These two had some great outfits and it was just so cute how Heather was always adding little touches to Cobra's outfit while I was shooting him. This girl has a knack for pulling a look together!

Thank you to both of you for coming out posing for me. I had a great time getting to meet both of you. I hope you enjoy the photos. I hope to join you on the Playa sometime! ;)

Last weekend Chris and I got to spend the day with one of the cutest couples I have ever met. The ceremony was held in the beautiful St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Merna.
The bride was just glowing and the grooms eyes lit up anytime she was near (or he heard her giggle). Laura has one of those laughs that just makes everyone in the room smile. I had fun hanging out with the girls while they were getting ready and I know Chris had a good time with the guys, including the photogenic father of the bride.
We wish the two of you the very best! Thank you for letting us be a part of your day.

Introducing Monty The Snow Dog

A few months ago after going out to take photos of Paradise Pet's new foster dogs, Chris and I had some conversation on the idea of adopting a second dog.
We discussed how it could be a beneficial thing for Mojo (our other rescue) to have a more outgoing and playful friend around the house. We bounced the idea back and forth for a few days and ended up deciding to take a foster home to test.
Well after about a week with us it was evident that Monty was meant to be a part of this family. He is sweet, affectionate and really just a fun little goofball. He has not only helped Mojo come out of his shell a little more but has also brought so many smiles to our home.
Last weekend after the blizzard started to dwindle down we went out to dig out our driveway and took Monty out with us. He seemed to have so much fun out playing and hopping through the snow. I know we had a great time watching him jump and hop around, trying to get on top of the snow in the yard.

New Year.... New Goals

I hope all of you had a great holiday and a fantastic start to 2011. I have to say 2010 was a great year and much of that had to do with my awesome customers and supporters! I really can't wait to see what 2011 has in store for us!
I haven't posted much lately because I have been planning some creative project concepts for this year. I'm working on getting things lined up with models and make up artist. My fantastic husband is working away at updating the branding for my business cards and blog. We are also putting together my portfolio's for the blog. I can't wait to introduce those!
In 2010 we held a contest for my business's anniversary, I had so much fun with it and Isa's shoot turned out beautiful. This year we will have a few other contest besides the anniversary.
I'm really looking forward to this year and what it has in store!

A few weeks ago I celebrated the 2 year anniversary of this blog. As a part of that celebration I held a contest on my fan page and gave the winner a full portrait session. We had a total of six contestants but in the final days two of them really stood out. The competition was strong between the two up until the final hour, when Isa took a strong lead and won the contest. When I spoke to Isa's mom a week later she told me all Isa wanted was a fashion shoot! (my kind of girl!!)
Isa arrived ready to pose and have fun! You would have thought I had a little professional model in my studio! She was not only gorgeous but she was comfortable and confident in front the camera. (Mom, I think you might have a future model on your hands) I had so much fun with this shoot!
Isa, thank you for posing for me! I hope you and your family enjoy your photos.

A few weeks ago I was asked to do a not so typical portrait session for Steve and Deb.When they explained what the dress code was going to be I instantly thought of borrowing a friends really awesome home for the shoot. J and Cass's house is not your average every day home. It has a unique appeal which is exactly what I needed for Steve and Deb's photos.
Fortunate for me, the King and Queen of the house agreed as well as their dog, to allow us acces. Again I give my humble thanks!!

It's been over five years now since I started spinning poi. While there are plenty of terms for it, probably the most popular is spinning fire. My journey in fire spinning surprisingly started with photography.

We were just sitting outside one night and noticed some people across the street spinning. Instantly I looked over and said I want to photograph that! So, Chris and I walked over and asked if they would mind if I took some photos of them spinning. John and Stacy spun for us the next night and as they were packing up their stuff, asked if I wanted to try. I was really nervous, but really wanted to give it a try. First, it's a lot harder than it looks and secondly I had no idea that they had just sparked (pun intended) a new addiction.

As a group we would get together several times a week. It was amusing to see the neighbors slowly start coming out their apartments on our practice nights. I'm pretty sure they thought we were crazy but we certainly were entertaining. Eventually the group grew from 4 of us to on some nights as many as 8-10.

Today, many of the group have moved away, but we stay in touch and get together when we get a chance. A few weeks ago our friend Zac was in town and we decided to spin, so I pulled out the camera. Below are a few of the photos I captured that night. It was awesome to pull out the camera to capture the fire again. It always creates interesting images.

My Special Dog, Mojo

I introduced our dog Mojo on my blog when we first adopted him. It has since been over a year, since Mojo officially became a part of our family. For those not familiar with his story, we adopted Mojo after he was rescued from a puppy mill. He was a little over 3 years old when we adopted him and he had a slight bald spot where his little head would rub the roof of his kennel. His bald spot is now gone but the scars of the puppy mills are still alive and well. It does get a little better every day but we still have a long way to go.
As I said before, it has been over a year...closer to two years. He still will not play like the average dog would, he's scared of just about everything and he prefers to lay in my bed than to socialize with people (even the family he lives with everyday). He has a fear of dog toys, especially raw hide treats. He won’t potty in the grass he prefers the gravel in the back yard or the sidewalk when we are out for a walk. He doesn’t bark or growl, in fact he doesn’t really make a sound at all. Regardless of these things he has won a special place in our hearts and whether he knows it or not he is a part of this family.
Mojo has found things he does love....treats, our bed (as you will see in the photos), running around the back yard with my husband and son, his evening walks after dinner and of course doggie daycare (Paradise Pets).

I hope everyone enjoys these photos of Mojo and I hope his story might help someone else who may have just adopted a puppy mill survivor. Always remember that with patience things do get better.

This is Dharma, she was rescued with Mojo but adopted to another home. No one knew how bonded they were before their adoption. Fortunately I have become friends with the lady who adopted her and we occasionally get together so Mojo & Dharma get to see each other. It is so cute to see the two of them together!

A few weeks ago a friend from Dwight, IL contacted me about some of my landscape photos. While chatting, I mentioned that I would love to come and take some photos around her community. Last Sunday, we got together to do just that. Lucky for me she grew up there and was able to give us some of the history and background.

In Augusta, Georgia, 14 years ago today I gave birth to an adorable baby boy. While he is a handsome young man, he is no longer that little baby. He has grown taller than me and has a deep voice like his father. He's an amazing young man that makes me proud everyday.

As we were sitting down chatting, the party bus limo arrived and in 5 seconds flat the house was full of students and parents. Carson's Senior Session

So I got an urgent call from Carson's mom a week or so ago saying Carson wanted photos with the corn behind the house. At first I didn't understand the urgency until his mom explained that they were in the middle of plowing and it wouldn't be long before it was all gone.

The next day we went out to their home for the shoot. Carson had plenty ideas for us and his grandfather was so accomodating. He gave us full run of his farm and even brought out one of the combines for us to use.

We had a really good time with this photo shoot. Carson, thanks for showing us around and tell your grandfather thanks for having us out.

A New Twist on a Classic

About a month ago I came up with an idea for a project and asked my best friend Alysha to help me out. I gave her only the word "Medusa" and she ran with it! She called her stylist and in three hours walked out of there with an amazing rendition of Medusa's hair. (Thank you Allison, another good friend of ours!)
Unfortunately, mother nature was not smiling upon us that warm summer night. Within minutes of the sun going down, we got all the gear set up outside, get a few test shots and it starts raining. Due to this we were forced to scrap the Medusa idea and improvise.
Lucky for me Alysha is a awesome model and a classic beauty. She made the change from Medusa to pin-up seem effortless! Her tattoos and piercings give the photos that modern twist.

Allison, thank you for helping to come up with a hair style solution for my hair brained ideas! Awesome work!

Macy's 1st Annual Fall Fashion Extravaganza- Sneak Peek

This weekend I had the opportunity to work with Chris and two other photographers (David Beasley Jr and Monte Holiday) to capture a wonderful event at our local Macy's. The local models rehearsed for the show for over a month, working with Sofia Reed of Macy's and professional model Terrance L. There was live music during the show and even a walk down the runway by Senator Dan Brady and the Corn Belters Mascot.
